BankBird is open-source software, offered by Avion Studios. Read below what this means for you as a user.

In short BankBird is free, open-source software. You install it on your own server and are solely responsible for your installation, your data, and your security. Avion Studios provides the software as-is, without warranties. When known security issues arise, we look into them and fix them where we can.

BankBird is an open-source personal finance application developed by Avion Studios. The software is freely available under the AGPL-3.0 license and is offered as a self-hosted solution: you run the software on your own server or computer.

Avion Studios is not a bank, financial adviser, or certified financial institution. BankBird is a tool for personal use and does not replace professional financial advice.

📁 📁 Scope & administration

In its current version, BankBird is designed for one financial administration per installation. This means:

One household or person
A BankBird installation manages the finances of one person or household. Multiple user accounts are possible (e.g. a partner), but they share the same administration.

Multiple bank accounts
Within that single administration you can import and manage multiple bank accounts.

Multiple administrations in the future
The roadmap includes support for multiple independent administrations within one installation — useful for freelancers or multi-household setups. This is not yet available.

📋 📋 Terms of use

By installing and using BankBird you agree to the following terms:

Your own responsibility
As a user you are fully responsible for the installation, use, management, and security of your BankBird instance. This includes securing your server, managing access rights, and making regular backups of your data.
Use at your own risk
You use BankBird entirely at your own risk. The software is provided "as-is", without any express or implied warranty of fitness, reliability, or availability.
Not financial advice
The information and overviews BankBird generates are intended solely as a personal tool. They do not constitute financial, tax, or legal advice. Avion Studios is not responsible for decisions you make based on the output of the software.
Data accuracy
BankBird processes the bank statements you upload. Avion Studios makes no warranty regarding the accuracy of the processing and is not responsible for errors in the interpretation of your financial data.
Changes
Avion Studios reserves the right to change the software, documentation, and these terms at any time. Changes are published via the GitHub repository and/or this website.

Avion Studios accepts no liability for damages arising from the use of BankBird, including but not limited to:

🔒 Data breaches resulting from an unsecured server environment

You are ultimately responsible. As self-hosted software, BankBird runs on your infrastructure. Securing your server, database, network, and credentials is entirely your responsibility.

What BankBird stores, where it is stored, and how it relates to the GDPR.

All data is stored exclusively in the database on your own server. Avion Studios has no access to it.

Where is the data stored?

The database (MySQL or SQLite) runs on the server you manage. You decide where that is: local, a VPS, or your own cloud.

⚠️ When using AI: external

If you enable AI categorisation, transaction descriptions (not amounts or names) are sent to Anthropic or OpenAI. This is optional and can be disabled.

Relationship to the GDPR

BankBird processes personal data
Financial data, usernames, and email addresses fall within the scope of the GDPR. If you use BankBird exclusively for your own administration, you fall under the household exemption of the GDPR (Art. 2(2)(c)) and your obligations are limited.

Are you using BankBird for multiple people?
In that case you are the data controller under the GDPR. You must ensure a lawful basis (e.g. consent), secure the data, and enter into a data processing agreement if you engage external services.

Avion Studios is not a data processor
Because Avion Studios has no access to your data and does not process it, Avion Studios does not act as a data processor under the GDPR. No data processing agreement applies.

Retention periods
BankBird does not enforce automatic retention periods. You are responsible for deciding how long to keep your data and for deleting it when appropriate.

In short: if you use BankBird only for yourself or your own household, you have little to worry about under the GDPR in practice. If you use it for others, ensure you have their consent and that your server is properly secured.

Avion Studios takes security seriously. While we accept no liability for security incidents, we do our best to address known vulnerabilities.

Report responsibly
Discovered a security issue? Send an email to mail@avionstudios.nl or open a confidential issue on GitHub. Please do not disclose the vulnerability publicly before we have had the chance to look into it.

We investigate
Avion Studios reviews every reported vulnerability. We aim to send an initial response within 7 business days.

We fix it where possible
If the vulnerability is confirmed and exists in the software itself, we will release a fix. However, we cannot guarantee that every vulnerability can be resolved — the software is provided without warranty.

BankBird is built with privacy as its foundation. Your financial data stays on your own server.

  • We do not collect personal or financial data from your installation.
  • We do not store bank statements, transactions, or categories on our servers.
  • We do not place tracking cookies or use analytics on your installation.
  • We do not sell or share your data with third parties.
⚠️ What you manage yourself
  • You are responsible for storing and securing all data in your installation.
  • If you enable AI categorisation, transaction descriptions are sent to an external AI service (Anthropic or OpenAI). Please read their privacy policies.
  • BankBird is subject to the GDPR if you use it to process data belonging to other people. You are the data controller for that.

This public website (bankbird.avionstudios.nl) does not use tracking cookies and does not collect personal data. No analytics or advertising networks are used.
